Maternity Session At Home

Cherishing Moments Before Baby’s Arrival

This maternity session was so special because not only is it always exciting when welcoming a new baby into the world, but also I was able to capture the sweet bond that this little family of 3 has had for the past 5 years. Adam and Katie are the sweetest parents to their 5-year-old daughter, Ellis.

A few weeks before the session, I stopped by their home to look at their space and chat about wardrobe options. I was able to meet Katie and Adam that morning and chat about their daughter and her bubbly personality.

When session time came, Ellis excitedly met me at the door. This kid is READY. It was amazing to see how her bubbly, playful personality brought out a fun side of her parents.

That is one of the beautiful things about parenting to me — getting to see the ways that our children grow us and stretch us in ways that we never expect. Our relationships with our kids make us better people, better partners, and better friends.

One of my favorite parts about this session was getting to convey the sweet connection that mom and dad have with their only daughter. From time with them, I really could feel that they were a close-knit group of three. It was special to get to capture memories of just the three of them that they will be able to cherish forever.

What Should I Expect From An At-home Session?

When doing an at-home session I usually pick three places in your home that I will shoot in. We won’t always hit all three places, but I like to have options to give us a variety of images and create space for moments and natural interactions to occur. We can chat about these places before I arrive, so you can shove clothes in the closet of those rooms. Did you catch that? Do not worry about creating a pristine home!

Locations In The Boyd Home

For this session, we ended up using all three locations! We started in their kitchen, filled with beautiful natural light. It was sweet to be able to take photos of them in a space they poured so much love into and a space I could tell is the hub of their home.

Next, we spent some time in the master bedroom while Ellis read a book to us. Whenever a child has an idea during a session, I run with it.

It’s so much easier to take the path of least resistance, and if you go with the flow, it will make for the most organic, natural photos of your family just being your family!

We took some photos outside as well before it was time for Ellis to go to school. During the whole session, she was carrying around a baby doll. It was so adorable getting to watch her have some big sister practice!

I am so excited to head back to this family’s home in a couple of months to celebrate the arrival of their new baby!
