Cake Smash Studio Sessions
There’s something truly magical about capturing motherhood in its most authentic, unscripted moments. Recently, I had the joy of photographing a mini motherhood session for Anna Claire in her Auburn, Alabama studio, Born & Raised. She didn’t know she wanted this type of session, but I did—and that’s part of what makes my work as a motherhood photographer so special. From intimate motherhood captures to playful cake smash studio sessions, it’s all about preserving these precious memories. After I delivered the gallery, she told me, “You gave me something I didn’t even know I wanted.” And right there, that’s the heart of my goal as a studio photographer.
The Sentimentality of an Impromptu Motherhood Session
As a motherhood photographer, my superpower is observing and anticipating. I knew Anna Claire’s love for nostalgic black-and-white imagery and her desire for documenting those quiet, unassuming moments of motherhood. I had seen the photos hanging on her walls and knew her appreciation for hints of the past. So, when it came to her impromptu motherhood session, I approached it with that understanding in mind. It wasn’t about a strict list of must-dos but about capturing those beautiful, real moments that often go unnoticed.
This is the beauty of a spontaneous motherhood session—it allows us to celebrate parenthood authentically, especially when the little one is nearing that one-year milestone. There’s a mix of emotions as your baby turns one, a bittersweet realization that this precious phase is passing. That’s why I focus on capturing the small details, the raw emotions, and the unique bond between mother and child. By simply observing and anticipating, I can give you memories you didn’t even realize you wanted to preserve. For Anna Claire, this meant freezing the tiny moments that truly matter, and I am honored to document those for her.
Cake Smash Sessions: A Fun Milestone Celebration
Now, let’s talk about cake smash studio sessions! These are a whole different kind of fun, centered entirely on your little one and all their frosting-covered, giggly joy. A cake smash session is one of the best ways to celebrate that one-year milestone. For Anna Claire’s daughter, Veda, we transformed the studio into a birthday paradise with adorable props, a stunning cake, and a sense of playfulness that only a one-year-old can bring.
Studio sessions are perfect for cake smashes, milestones, and even minimal maternity or announcement shoots. I’ve got the studio stocked with beautiful props—think pretty birthday hats, custom “1” cake toppers, and a special chair to make that celebratory portrait extra memorable.
If you prefer, I can provide the cake as well. I’ve learned what size works best and which designs photograph beautifully, so you can just show up and enjoy the experience! Cake smash sessions typically last about 30 minutes, giving us just enough time to capture all the adorable moments. And don’t worry—I take care of all the cleanup afterward so you can leave the mess behind!
One of my favorite parts of Veda’s cake smash session was when we dressed her in her mom’s first birthday dress before diving into the cake. It was a beautiful nod to the past and made for some timeless, sentimental photos. It’s these touches that make each cake smash so unique and special.
Whether it’s a motherhood session, a cake smash, or a milestone studio session, it’s all about capturing the joy, love, and fleeting moments of childhood.
