Lyle Ray One Year | In-Home Studio Session

One of my favorite things about photography is finding ways to make sessions feel easy and natural for families while still creating images that feel timeless. These in home backdrop portraits were such a good example of that balance.

For a season I had access to a studio space, and while I loved getting to photograph families there, it’s not something I’ve been able to keep up with in this current season of life. But sessions like this reminded me that you really can create that simple studio feel at home when the light is right.

For this session, we split our time between classic backdrop portraits of their little one and relaxed family photos outside at The Jule. I loved getting to combine both styles in one session. The backdrop photos gave us those timeless little portraits while the outdoor portion felt playful and connected in such a natural way.

If you love the look of studio portraits but also want lifestyle images mixed in, bringing a backdrop into your home might be a really good option. Homes with lots of natural light tend to work best — especially spaces with big windows, lighter walls, and soft morning light that isn’t too harsh or direct.

At the end of the day, I want sessions to feel simple for you. I don’t want you dragging in a ton of equipment or spending hours prepping your house. The more relaxed the experience feels, the more room there is for genuine moments and photos that actually feel like your family.

These sessions are such a sweet option for milestone portraits and I’m always happy to talk through whether your space might work well for them.
